Spinal Manipulation – Osteopathic Techniques
This Osteopathic Spinal Manipulation Techniques Course combines manipulative and unique rehabilitation techniques. This approach not only makes the course relevant for day-to-day practice but also develops appropriate strategies for treating the sedentary to elite athlete.
The addition of Spinal Rehabilitation through unique functional movement retraining not only enhances the effect of the manipulation technique but also enhances the improvement of spinal mobility and strength, an obvious essential part of patient treatment.
The course has been designed to provide comprehensive and progressive tuition over two days, allowing time to practice and consolidate the manipulative skills learnt. The course focuses on allowing time for close 1:1 supervision on every technique learnt.
Extensive Clinical reasoning of the Cervical spine is covered in lectures and practical components of the course developing the safe application of cervical spine manipulation techniques.
The group size is kept to a maximum of 12 for excellent tutor/student ratio.
Topics included in the 2 days:
Active and passive mobility testing of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine.
Osteopathic manipulation techniques for the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine including rib techniques, cervicothoracic junction, thoracolumbar junction, lumbosacral junction and sacroiliac joint manipulation;
Cervical, Thoracic and Lumbar Spine clinical reasoning - theory and practical components. Including Upper cervical spine neural integrity testing and Upper cervical spine instability testing;
Lectures will cover the theoretical aspects underpinning the concepts of manipulation and spinal rehabilitation -includes research, effects, precautions, contraindications, tips to achieve a successful technique and common faults;
Case studies: used to apply clinical reasoning to spinal manipulation.
The Tutor’s approach is based on the understanding that it takes time to develop the necessary skills to effectively apply manipulative techniques. The tutor has a relaxed, patient, hands-on approach to teaching. He concentrates on firstly developing the participant’s ability to correctly position the spinal segment for manipulation. Then concentrates on developing the participant’s ability to feel for the appropriate amount of resistance at the spinal segment before finally developing the skill to appropriately apply the high velocity thrust.
Who is this course aimed at? This course is aimed at any Physiotherapist, Osteopath or Chiropractor who is looking to enhance their existing manual therapy skills. All participants must be HPC registered and for Physiotherapists members of the CSP. All participants will be required to fill in a spinal manipulation screening form at the beginning of the course. The screening form is an in-depth subject and physical assessment to rule out any participant who could be at risk of injury from spinal manipulation.
